Information Buyers Should Know When Choosing Mens Titanium Rings

By Lelia Hall

A relative newcomer in the jewelry marketplace compared to more traditional metals, titanium has certainly earned itself a place of merit since its late 1990's debut. People admire this lustrous material for its superb durability and lightweight nature as well as its contemporary elegance, making it an ever popular choice for men's rings in particular. Since it differs from other metals in some ways, it's best to first learn more about it before buying mens titanium rings.

Titanium is a natural metal with a light, shiny gray color. Various techniques can be used to alter its finish and create a different look. Perhaps the most intriguing feature of this material is its high strength to weight ratio, which makes it super-strong but also very lightweight. Because of its hardness, it is mostly shaped into simple contemporary designs with fewer added gemstones than some other metals.

The nature of this metal appeals to both sexes, but to many men in particular since they appreciate both its clean-cut, sleek appearance and also its practicality. This metal is essentially unbreakable and will survive most wear and tear, it is hypoallergenic, does not get hot and burn one's finger easily, and its manufacture is minimally destructive to the environment. These rings are available in a wide range of prices too.

Similar to other metals, titanium is grouped according to its hardness into grades 1 through 4. Most good quality rings are crafted from "commercially pure" titanium which contains no more than 1 percent of other metal alloys. The majority of pieces are made from grade 2 to 4 metal which provide ultimate durability and resistance to scratches, yet they can still be engraved or resized if needed.

Some pieces are designated "aircraft grade", which means they possess even more strength from additional metal alloys of aluminum and vanadium. Although some may prefer this kind, one must be aware of the fact that it is very difficult to remove them in case of an emergency, and they cannot be repaired, resized, or engraved due to their extreme hardness.

The ebony sheen of a black titanium ring can be quite eye-catching, but one should recognize that not all black designs are equal. Some have been physically transformed using heat or silicon dioxide, permanently changing the metal's color. Whereas, others have merely had a colored or ion plating applied to make them appear black, and this will gradually chip away, spoiling its appearance.

Gold, silver, or another metal may sometimes be added to a titanium ring to give a different look. Inlaid designs feature a strip of this metal, while plated ones just have a thin coating of it. This latter types calls for more care, or they may develop scratches that will need buffing to remove them.

It's a good idea to buy from a retailer who guarantees their work and offers at least a 30-day refund policy. Many designs can be resized if needed, but some cannot due to their particular design, if this is the case one may wish to inquire about a lifetime exchange policy. Carefully selecting the proper size from the beginning is important, most men can comfortably wear a ring in the 6 to 10 millimeter size range.
