How A Pearl Is Formed

By Sandra Sullivan

For over many years that passed the pearls, very extraordinary gems, were considered as one of the most beautiful treasures that can be found on the seabed and on oysters. It was used as jewelry for women, people created a way for it to be a part of fashion. Before it becomes a Hawaiian Pearl Jewelry, take a look at how this beautiful thing was formed.

A natural pearl is technically comprised of about 100% of conchiolin and calcium carbonate. People thought that the formation is of this type is through an accidental procedure. Because of a microscopic parasitic animal invades the mollusk where this beautiful gem will be formed.

Such parasite is named as the irritant. This irritant will make a way to invade any oyster that it sees. Once it is already inside the oyster will defensively response to the invader, creating a fluid that would cover and trap the invader. The coating consists of both calcium carbonate and conchiolin, which are essential in creating such a gem.

When this process is repeatedly done by the same mollusk, along the way a nacre or pearl will be made. The estimated time for this procedure could take up to more than three years. It could form into several shapes, and the most spherical one, which what most jewelry makers use, is considered the rarest.

The cultural pearl is formed when the shell response to a tissue being implanted to it. This tissue called the graft. The process starts when a graft from another shell if donated to a recipient shell. This then will cause a reaction. A sac will develop into which the graft precipitates an essential calcium, which will develop into a nacre.

This could be done in different methods, such as using shells found in either in fresh or sea water, personal implantation of the tissue to the shell or by putting an additional spherical bead to serve as the nucleus. Considering this process to a combination of human and natural circumstances.

Another type of nacre can be easily created, this is called the imitation pearl. A round glass bead is created, and dipping it into a liquid mixture that is made up of fish scales. After dipping it, a fake one is created. The real nacre s heavy and these are not, also the coating is just thin.

With the creation of fake ones, people get counterfeited. Fakes do not have any same process in the other two since you could only make one in a minute. But to know whether the one you have is fake or not, you have to rub it against your teeth, when the color starts wearing off, then that is a hoax.

Before even making any ornaments and pieces of jewelry out of these precious gems, the process they underwent is very long. But after all that, we can see how beautiful and amazing it is. If you happen to own, you must take care of it properly and responsibly because it was made in a very special and long process.
